Today, more than three decades after the last Trabi rolled off the line, the little "cardboard racer" from Zwickau is a cult icon. Not despite its quirks — but because of them.

A Legend on Four Wheels (with a Two-Stroke Engine)

The Trabant 601 first rolled off the line in 1964 and was built almost unchanged until 1990. For 26 years. No model updates, no facelifts, no "new generation." What works, works — that was the East German logic.

26 horsepower from two strokes. 100 km/h top speed, in theory. Fuel gauge? Optional. Power steering? Good one. Air conditioning? Roll down the window.

And yet: over 3 million units were built. No other garage in Central Europe held as much patience and inventiveness as a Trabi garage. Anyone who drove a 601 could also fix it. With a hammer, some wire, and a healthy dose of optimism.

Cardboard? Plastic? Doesn't Matter — As Long As It Drives.

The famous nickname Rennpappe ("racing cardboard") is actually wrong. The Trabant's body wasn't made of cardboard but of Duroplast — a composite of phenolic resin and cotton fibers. Recycled cotton, to be precise. Old rags turned into a car. Sustainability before the word was even invented.

The irony of history: while in the West every other Trabi joke boiled down to "it's made of cardboard," the material was actually more advanced than the sheet-steel bodies of the competition. No rust. No rotting through. Only — if it ever caught fire, it really burned.
